For seventeen years groups from several churches have come to spend time ministering to children at our three week VBS. Some come with a large group and stay in our facilities for a week, others come by themselves for a day, but however they come there is a double impact that takes place. Children from our community flock to our VBS because they receive a great deal of personal attention and love in the name of Jesus. Our volunteers often explain that they receive much more than they give.
For the last 18 years young teen boys in southwest Detroit have played flag football at the Military - Regular park. This has been a staple with our Jr. Boys at VBS. The boys compete as boys will, but the competition does not end on the playing field. The sixty boys who play football must also learn daily memory verses, complete workbooks, and behave themselves to earn points toward receiveing trophies at the end of VBS.

Our volunteers come and work with the children in our community, often building relationships that sometimes last for years. Some groups come and stay in our facility. We have a kitchen, two showers, and plenty of room on the floor for sleeping bags and air mattresses. Groups as large as 90 have stayed for a week. We guide and instruct the leaders of our guest groups but they are organized and mainly directed by their own leaders. Usually volunteers are divided to work with children who are separated into 6 age groups. Each group spends time through the afternoon in different activities: crafts, Bible study, recreation, and lunch, before they return for our closing program at 2:45 PM. We begin at noon and send them home at 3:00 PM. Some volunteers like to do work projects either in our facility or in our community after VBS.
